Montalban Theatre Nike Mag Launch Event Recap

Nike was kind enough to invite me as a VIP guest with to their Nike Mag launch event last night at the Montalban Theatre in Hollywood.  And just to keep it real for a moment, all it meant was that I didn’t have to wait in line, which was pretty nice in itself.  The event was plenty packed with sneakerheads and Back to the Future enthusiasts.

Upon walking in, there was a monstrous glass case display clearly filled with the Nike Mag from top to bottom, side to side, but it was filled with smoke, prohibiting a clear defined visual of the kicks.  Thirty minutes after the doors were officially opened for general admission, all of the guests were directed into the screening room where they had a primary screen set up along with two smaller side screens.  After everyone took their seats, a live orchestra called the “Hip Hop Orchestra” was revealed behind the main screen as it was raised into the rafters, and they played three signature songs from Back to the Future and the 1980’s including Michael Jackson’s “Beat It.”

Once the orchestra concluded their set, Jason Kennedy from E! News took the stage and introduced himself as the host of the evening’s festivities.  From there, he brought out Tiffany Beers, a Product Developer at Nike, who was in charge of re-building the Nike Mag from the ground up for Tinker Hatfield.  After she spoke at length and gave a full background about the shoe’s journey, Donald Fullilove, who played Goldie Wilson and Goldie Wilson III in Back to the Future I and II, respectively, came out and gave his own take on the Mag’s release, which included an ever so nostalgic rendition of, “Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!”

If you’re a fan of the films, to hear that live and in person was definitely a treat.
