Jordan Brand has always dared fans to fly like the legend himself. After all the hype and anticipation, they have officially unveiled the Jordan XX9 in New York. Usually Jordan Brand will hold this type of press conference and revealing the shoes near the All Star Break in February, but this time they’ve unveiled later to better match the timing of the beginning of the new NBA season.
Never afraid of criticism, Mike and Tinker have always been innovative to come out with materials to push their shoes to perform the best on court.

Flight Plate and Woven Upper

The XX9 will feature two new technologies: an evolved Flight Plate and the first-ever performance woven upper. Flight Plate is popular amongst athletes since it is very responsive and spreads the shock from impact rather than absorbing it in the two traditional spots: the forefoot and heel.

The woven upper gives the shoe a completely different look. Tinker had discovered that the woven upper is the best match to allow flexibility and stability. Also the design and the woven upper become one which eliminates layers. This eliminates unnecessary materials just for the sake of appearance and mixes looks with performance. There are specific areas of the shoes that will be stretchy to allow flexibility and comfort as well as tighter areas to maintain support.

From Nike’s introduction of the Air Jordan XX9:

Each year, the Air Jordan launch serves as a platform for the Jordan Brand to push consumer expectations for the style and performance of on-court basketball shoes. Since 1985, the launch of the brand’s most premium performance product has debuted innovations such as Visible Air in the AJ III, carbon-fiber materials in the AJ XI, and most recently, Flight Plate technology in the Air Jordan XX8.

The Air Jordan XX9 is no different – featuring two revolutionary technologies: an evolved Flight Plate coupled with the first-ever performance-woven upper. This design creates a shoe that feels and plays as if it were tailored specifically to each athlete’s foot.

Look for these on Jordan Brand athletes’ feet on court during the postseason. As for consumers, we will have to wait until September and the shoes will retail for $225 USD.
